Abstract

Patients with terminal cancer and their families suffer from physical, psychosocial, spiritual and financial distress. Importance of managing terminal stage has been more emphasized in cancer than in any other disease. Due to its limited support system, current medical system and laws do not play a role to satisfy patients and families needs for managing pain and symptom and preparing for death with dignity. Development of a systematic and comprehensive Home Care Nursing based Palliative Care Program could satisfy patients and their families with terminal cancer by providing optimal care to them. Home care nurses can provide patient centered palliative care to the patients in continuum of their medical treatment during their 24 hour of stay at home. Cost effectiveness and customer satisfaction has also been emphasized as outcomes of Home Care Nursing based Palliative Care Program provided to patients and families with terminal cancer. The necessity and importance of developing a Home Care Nursing based Palliative Care Program has been emphasised through literature review. This paper suggests that systemic support is necessary to develop and apply a Home Care Nursing based Palliative Care Program for patients and their families with terminal cancer.
